The Client wished to prevent habitat loss with the aim of re-introducing the red listed native Grey-Partridge to the Nagle mountains and surrounding areas. Following the purchase of a 6-acre site at Corrin Wood near Fermoy Co. Cork the client made contact to realise their plans.

As “improved” marginal farmland the existing site was largely laid to rough pasture with scrub gorse encroachment in recent years. The presence of an existing land drain allowed us to re-sculpt it as a naturalistic stream terminating in a large constructed wetland with a protected island for the Grey-Partridge.

We further proposed a looped walk to bring people on to the site, from the existing car park at Corrin woods. The walk comes through a Sweet Chestnut forest before opening out onto the site. On site seating areas, bird hides/viewing platforms and a raised wetland walk encourage interaction with the reserve.

With a budget of €80,000 the client made use of substantial voluntary labour from members of the local community.
