Washington Street, Student Accommodation

This tight urban site was the location of the Lee Boot Company, which operated here from the second half of the nineteenth century until the early 1980s.

The landscape architects brief was to support the architectural intent of turning this scheme into a dense student residence scheme. The protected structure was to be retained onsite with a planning requirement to reuse the cast Iron stanchions from the former Boot factory within the semi private courtyards. The brief for the semi private spaces was to facilitate communal activities for the students.

A roof garden, 2 communal courtyards and the rear lane of Lynch’s Street were part of the Landscape Architects brief. As part of the planning submission COMLA were required to undertake a Landscape & Visual Impact Assessment of the scheme. COMLA were retained for full design services through all stages.
